25 August 2011 - east coast quake

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

What are the lessons of the Great (ahem) East Coast Quake?

1. If you’re a member of a social species, the chatter IS the news. Who needs journalism?
2. Geology is an underappreciated source of terrorism.
3. People unconsciously rely on deep assumptions of basic stability in the world. Everyone should experience Armageddon once, so they’re not too freaked out when it happens again.

clue:

My first thought was, “The U.S. Geological Survey must have a real-time earthquake map,” which I found less than a minute later at about the same time that people around me were first seeing Twitter reports. But all I learned was the epicenter and magnitude, everyone else heard the chatter!

give me a clue so sweet and true
