In the old-time authoritarian family, boys were to grow up strong and independent so that they too could become controlling father-figures and beat their boys. In the generations immediately after, boys were to grow up strong and independent to avoid that, and by the time of the sexual revolution girls could be abused for the same reason (as well as the traditional reasons). Today we have abandoned that goal; now children are to have a safe and efficient life to fit them for a society in which independence does not matter, so they are micromanaged and kept under surveillance to suppress any unruly originality. Finally we’ve found the right tool to break the ancient cycle! Those who have never been free savor freedom most.
