population: We want rule of law!
historian: That’s the heaviest one of all. It’ll pull you down in the end.
Qin: Now listen, I’ve been a center of high culture ever since the Bronze Age. Not like you. I know what I can carry.
historian: Wealthy populations always move away from authoritarian government. No exception has ever stood long.
Qin: Dynasties fall when they lose the Mandate of Heaven—I mean, when they misgovern. I just have to keep doing stuff right.
historian: You yourself have measured the rate of mass protest as directly proportional to GNP.
Qin: You’re not listening! Strong rule is one of my ancient traditions! My ancient traditions make me super strong!
