Anthropologists say that funeral customs symbolically reflect the beliefs and values of the culture. Thus the ancient Greeks burned their dead and thought of the afterlife as underground, while Christians bury their dead and prefer an afterlife in the sky. Here we observe a basic characteristic of all human belief systems: Self-contradiction.
