science: Now, the long-term goal is to explore Newton’s great ocean of truth—
money: An ocean, can’t miss it, shortest path is a straight line.
car: Voom!
science: Whoah whoah! We can’t just strike out at random, we have start from what we know and explore promising directions.
money: Oh, I see exactly what you mean.
car: Swerrrrrrrrve!
science: Uh... in general, downhill tends to be more promising.
money: That ditch is downhill.
car: Thud.
science: I would have settled for a fishpond of truth.

clue:

After WWII there was a great boom in acceptance of basic research, and since then the pendulum has been slowly but surely swinging back to short-term thinking.

give me a clue so sweet and true
