If there is a God, surely Its attitude is like this: “Ha ha, look, they evolved during an ice age! The climate is so unstable, anything they do will get them in trouble. Ha ha ha!”

During an ice age, the climate system is unstable on short time scales so that even small pushes like the Milankovic cycles or global industry can change the state.

The current ice age started 2.6 million years ago and we’re just trying to end it now. The previous major ice age ended 260 million years ago in the Paleozoic—they’re that rare. So it’s surprising that we evolved during one.
