19 February 2014 - Mean Ocean Water

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

An Open and Closed Case

Vienna is the capital of a landlocked country. Also, the ocean is natural and cannot be standardized. But science sneers at such hurdles, giving us Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water, which is not real ocean water but distilled ocean water, meaning it’s different from rainwater only as far as laboratory distillation apparatus is different from the open-air distillation apparatus called “Earth”. So if you think spending a few hundred million on climate denialism will sidetrack science—hah! Science sneers! It only sidetracks politics, the part that counts.

clue:

The point of Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water is to provide a zero point so that you can say how different your local ocean water is, in isotopic composition, from average ocean water.

My response to reports that rich backers are forming and funding climate denial organizations, creating the appearance of controversy out of thin air. Warning: I made up the number.

give me a clue so sweet and true
