When it’s young, a field is defined by its name: Artificial intelligence, that’s getting computers to do stuff we call intelligent. As it grows, it is defined by its methods: AI, that’s heuristic search and blah blah. When fully mature, it becomes institutional structure and funding: AI is what you can get a grant for if you say you’re doing AI.
