An American primary election is the opposite of a supermarket. The
supermarket is full of bland foods (because somebody will dislike any
given flavor) with colorful labels (because somebody will like any
given flavor). The primary is full of colorful characters with the same
label.
clue:
The implied point is that there’s been an increasing tendency for the
more extreme candidates to win, the opposite of what the voters want.
Politics is increasingly polarized, voters aren’t.
