Did you ever notice that the Geneva Conventions are unstable over evolutionary time? In a war with high casualties among soldiers, like WWI, natural selection favors unfitness for combat. In a war with high casualties among the population, like WWII, it’s the other way around. So if the sides remain genetically isolated enough to support war at all over evolutionary time, the historical case, then evolution rewards states which follow a strategy that protects their soldiers better than their citizens.
