The word “sanguine” used to mean bloody, or sometimes bloodthirsty, because of course people thirst for more of what makes them up. Today we use the word to mean optimistic, especially optimistic by comparison with others. Well, you do lose your optimism if exsanguinated. But I think it’s mostly the thirst for more of the optimism we all have.
