Maintain Preparedness

What do we know of this alien space probe? The only planet it passed near was Earth, which means it was looking specifically at humanity. It was hundreds of meters long, with ample room for equipment, so it probably had a clear view. Its trajectory, its extreme light curve, and its cleanliness signaled that it was artificial, but its boring spectrum and its ordinary interstellar velocity (to take a leisurely look) made it appear like any other deep space rock. That means they wanted to contact any advanced civilization they found, but preferred to ignore and be ignored by primitives like us. We can expect another probe to come by and see if we’ve made progress, probably within the next few hundred thousand years.

clue:

The most likely reason that the first discovered interstellar visitor passed near the Earth is that otherwise we would not have discovered it. That is, of course, part of the disguise.

take oh take this clue away
