Humans are grandmasters of manipulating each other; see exhibits ranging from North Korea to the hype term “deep learning”. Deep learning is a form of shallow learning, amazingly successful when it works, and it is both a high technology and a mysterious black art, like shipbuilding before the understanding of buoyancy. One of the things deep learning can do, in the big data surveillance society we have been manipulated into choosing for ourselves, is to achieve superhuman skill at manipulating people.
