1 January 2018 - grasp the basics

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Behind instructional design is a theory that says people should grasp the basics before they attempt advanced applications. You don’t need to understand the advanced applications of this theory to know that it’s bunk. We invent new knowledge as castles in the air and build the foundations later, and people can just as easily learn it in the same order. Schooling won’t change, though. In education, as in science but with greater stubbornness, theory is stronger than experience.
