Where I live, by the late 19th century, stone had become a prestige material. If you wanted a high-class house, you built it out of wood and brick, then wrapped it in stone for looks. Today, wood and brick are prestige materials. You can tell by all the fake wood and fake bricks. One of these days we’ll invent materials cheaper than plastic, and plastic will become a prestige material.
