Quarantine is still useful after it fails and the disease escapes to the wide world. Isolation slows the spread so that we have more time to develop vaccines and treatments. That’s the minor use; the important one is in the similarity to blood-letting—it lets helpless people believe they can do good. Don’t let in those dirty whatevers!
