Old-fashioned wars of conquest are rare today because they don't pay. The up-front cost is higher and the long-run economic benefit is lower. We have to make do with ethnic and religious strife, civil wars against tyranny, and the occasional old grudge like Taiwan. But wait, history is saved from boredom! Putin did not get the memo!
