The combination of technical progress and economic imperative means that we can’t beat ’em, but we can still join ’em. We can cyborg up bit by bit, an eye for an eye, a chip for a thought. Of course in the long run it ends up the same, since we’ll eventually have to throw out the grossly inefficient protein chemistry. But it will feel no different than growing up and realizing how dumb you were as a teenager, and that is what matters when you are a frog in hot water.
