Photo Criticism Lesson 1 - Identify Influences

The first step in appraising a photograph is to identify the photographer’s major influences. Usually you can do this by saying,

“Oh yeah, another Ansel Adams wannabe. OK.”

Rarely, you may encounter a person who has heard of more than one famous photographer. Substitute the appropriate name from this list, depending on the subject of the image:

landscape - David Muench
out-of-focus portrait - Julia Margaret Cameron
weird or unrecognizable - Man Ray
naked little girls - Lewis Carroll
