7 December 1999 - WTO arrogance

< yesterday -- tomorrow >

Delegate: Reducing trade barriers will help economies grow and eventually alleviate poverty. It’s just that individual governments are so short-sighted—
Protester: I’ll say. But don’t you see the evil of unfettered wealth? Capitalism is like a crowded room, where everybody talks louder and louder until you can’t hear a thing.
Delegate: And sore throats are hardly Pareto-optimal, eh? Sounds more like the protest movement to me.
Protester: Pareto what?
Delegate: Forgive me for knowing what I’m talking about. It’s a political sin, I know. Unlike you, we diplomats at least keep our irresponsibility indoors.
Anarchist: I heard that! You smug scallop-brained scalawag! You squint-souled—which one’s your car? I’ll slash the tires! Damn it, I’ll slash everybody’s tires! Ha!
Delegate: Hey! Stop!
Protester: Darn theorist almost deserves it.
