Fred Brooks discussed the building of large software systems in The Mythical Man-Month. He wrote:

“Plan to throw one away; you will, anyhow,” and (in another context)
“The general tendency is to over-design the second system, using all the ideas and frills that were cautiously sidetracked on the first one.”
