The first autonomous weapons to go must be those that take humans out of the loop. That’s the classic problem with mines: Like a rabid bureaucracy, they accept no orders from their commanders and do their jobs blindly, biting enemy and friend alike. Smart autonomous weapons won’t have those problems, at least not if the rabid bureaucracy that procures them can be put down.
